LA TZOUMAZ PROFILES – NILS RIVA

Born and raised in La Tzoumaz, Nils got an early start on the slopes. He is an instructor with the Swiss Ski School here and has helped us put together the Freeride & Safety Weekends.

WE ASKED HIM A FEW QUESTIONS:


When did you learn to ski?

Almost as soon as I could walk!

I started at 2.5 years old.

My parents would take me, both skiing and snowboarding.

Why did you decide to work with the ski school?

First of all skiing is my passion and I wanted to share it with the others, so, I followed my Dad's footsteps – him being a world class ski instructor. What do you find is the best part of your job?

Being able to ski everyday and share the passion of skiing with my guests. ...and he worst part of you job?

The pain in my ski boots at the end of the season.

Do you have any tips or tricks for skiing in poor visibility and other difficult conditions

Relax and stay near the tree line, trust your other senses when vision is poor.

What's the funniest thing that happens on the mountain?

People from Verbier stuck in La Tzoumaz after staying too long at the "Après Ski". Don't miss the last gondola ! :-)

What is your best skiing memory from the La Tzoumaz?

Skiing down a couloir in the classic Vallon d'Arby on a perfect powder day.

What's you favourite run – piste & off piste?

The Casino run and Tête des Etablons North face.

What is the best way to prepare for the ski season / best exercise?

I like to work on my balance with some slackline and my strength with a mix of burppees, mountain climber and pushups. (The editor needed some help – in case you do too here are a few links)

What is your favourite meal before a ski session?

Coffee, eggs and bread with some Nutella Do you have any skiing or mountaineering Idols?

If you were not working with skiing what would you be doing instead?

Speed Flying and mountaineering.
